Yesterday at the trinitylongroomhub O’Connell 250 Symposium, Taoiseach Micheál Martin launched two new stamps to mark 250 years since the birth of Daniel O’Connell, campaigner for Catholic emancipation. The stamps commemorate Daniel O’Connell’s enduring legacy through stylised depictions of momentous scenes from his political career; in one, O’Connell is shown speaking at one of his famous monster meetings, while in the second he is depicted following his release from Richmond Bridewell, the prison where he was held for three months in 1843 after his proposed monster meeting in favour of the Repeal of the Union, or Irish self-government, was declared illegal.
