Last year the world generated around 400 million tonnes of plastic waste.
Most plastic never really disappears – instead, it becomes smaller. Particles are then ingested by fish or farm animals and eventually consumed by humans in food and tap water.
To
#BeatPlasticPollution, consumer pressure and individual actions — such as refusing plastic cutlery and straws, using refillable water bottles, and bringing your own coffee cups and shopping bags— are key. Yet, real change needs to come from companies, investors, policymakers and governments.
Over the next two weeks, countries will work to negotiate a global plastics treaty at ungeneva to build a more sustainable future for all.
