📢 Major Milestone for Flood Control Project
The City of Apache Junction acquired 76.5 acres of State Trust land to build the future Weekes Wash Regional Multi-Use Detention Facility, a planned earthen flood control basin. Proceeds from the land sale will benefit Arizona public education through the Arizona State Land Trust’s Permanent Common School Fund.
📍 Located south of Hwy 88 and north of E. Lost Dutchman Blvd, the site will host a flood control basin designed to:
- Improve public safety for our first responders, who undertake substantial risks during search and rescue operations
- Reduce flood risk to more than 4,000 properties and cleanup costs
- Potentially remove homes from FEMA-designated floodplains
While our area is typically dry for much of the year, the City receives seasonal rainfall, particularly during monsoon and winter storm events that can quickly turn dry streambeds into fast-moving floodways.
