Except for the sounds of the Grateful Dead playing through the speakers, the Velvet Banjo is quiet on a Friday afternoon. Just one person has ambled in to get a beer at the bar, and from the window you can see a trail of cars slowly maneuvering through the construction outside. The Bus Rapid Transit construction project on East Colfax has been wreaking havoc on business owners since it began last fall, and the newgrass bar at 741 East Colfax Avenue has been no exception, says Scottie Sindelar. According to the co-owner, general manager and self-proclaimed “head dishwasher” of the Velvet Banjo, “there’s definitely a fear” that the business could close, but Sindelar and the team aren’t throwing in the towel just yet.
