Kai Brown has said that their true purpose in performing in drag as Kai Lee Mykels was to assure everyone, queer or not, that “their value is inherent no matter what society or another human being tells them.” Brown, who identified first as a gay man, then as a trans woman, said that embodying the character Kai Lee “helped me come into who I am as a human being.” Now, Brown has said goodbye to Kai Lee in part because they don’t need her anymore.
