Flash Flooding Turns NYC Commutes Into Chaos
On July 31, torrential rain brought flash floods to NYC, forcing subway riders at Brooklyn’s 7th Avenue station to climb out through grates to escape rising water. Social media videos showed flooded tracks, submerged entrances, and stranded commuters across Queens and Brooklyn.
The Port Washington Branch of the Long Island Railroad was suspended near Flushing, while the Bayside LIRR station was nearly underwater. A train had to be evacuated, and rideshare prices surged to $300 from Penn Station. The Clearview Expressway in Bayside also flooded, leaving vehicles, including a tractor trailer, stranded mid-highway.
Emergency crews worked overnight to pump out stations. As of Friday morning, limited LIRR service remains while repairs continue. Rain totals reached over 5 inches in parts of Suffolk County. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for NYC and nearby counties, urging basement residents to evacuate.
