He came within a length of immortality. Nearly two decades after his Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) wins, Smarty Jones has earned his place in the Hall of Fame. At 24, he’s still going strong—greeting visitors and soaking up sunshine at Equistar Training and Breeding in Pennsylvania. “He sometimes gets more mail than we do; whether it’s Christmas cards, birthday cards, boxes of treats or peppermints,” said Rodney Eckenrode, owner of Equistar Training and Breeding. “We’ve been fortunate to meet a lot of nice people who come to visit him.” Smarty Jones joins the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame on Aug 1.
