We mourn the loss of
#RobertWilson (1941–2025), a visionary director who forever altered the language of theater and opera.
In 2010 Wilson joined architect Charles Renfro in the Rubin’s theater for a lively discussion where he revealed what it was like to grow up as a gay person in 1950s Waco, Texas—and delivered the kind of declarations only the creator of "Einstein on the Beach" could:
🌀“Burn the schools of theater decoration! We don’t need them. Theater should be architectural.”
💡 “Without light there is no space.”
⏳ “Sometimes when we are really still, we are more aware of movement than when we move a lot.”
Wilson worked with many of the artists who defined the Rubin Museum’s first two decades: Marina Abramović, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Philip Glass, and Lou Reed.
The shape and time of theater are forever changed thanks to Robert Wilson.
