The 65,000+ acre Gifford Fire now only trails June’s 80,000 acre #MadreFire for largest fire in California this year. And with the #giffordfire being only 3% contained as of Monday evening, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it grow larger than the Madre Fire by Tuesday. The Gifford Fire broke out Friday afternoon in northern Santa Barbara County, near the San Luis Obispo county line...very close to where the Madre Fire started back in June! It’s churning through a fairly remote area, and currently poses no immediate threat to civilization, although Highway 166 between Santa Maria and Cuyama is closed east of Santa Maria. Since a major route from the San Joaquin Valley to the coast is currently closed, Cal Trans has decided to delay work on another significant Valley-to-the-Coast route, Highway 41 in western Fresno County.
