Cuba just passed a law that lets transgender people update the gender marker on their official ID without needing to undergo bottom surgery or present a court order.
This is a huge shift from past policy, where access to legal gender changes was limited and often tied to proof of surgery - which, while technically available in Cuba since 2008, remains hard to access due to economic sanctions and resource shortages.
The new law, approved by Cuba’s National Assembly on July 18, modernizes the country's entire civil registry system, from digitizing birth and death certificates to recognizing common-law partnerships. But for many LGBTQ+ Cubans, this reform represents long-overdue recognition and dignity.
Justice Minister Oscar Silvera Martínez said the changes will make documents “more valid and efficient,” and yes, the government is also introducing artificial intelligence into the system.
