Puerto Rico has banned gender-affirming health care for transgender youth.
On Wednesday (16 July), Republican Governor Jenniffer González-Colón signed a law that prohibits gender-affirming medical care for transgender people under 21.
The law, Senate Bill 350, prohibits the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries for transgender youth.
Doctors and other health professionals who continue to provide this care could face a $50,000 fine, up to 15 years in prison and the permanent loss of their license.Puerto Rico’s LGBTQ+ Federation criticised the law in a statement: “Let there be no doubt: We will go to court to challenge the constitutionality of the governor’s cruel and inhumane signing of a law that criminalises health professionals for caring for trans minors.”
