Today we honor the transgender people who lost their lives to anti-trans violence. Transgender Day of Remembrance began in 1999, almost a year after the murder of Rita Hester, a trans woman. Gwendolyn Ann Smith, an advocate for the transgender community, organized a candlelight vigil so that the lives of Hester and other trans people would not be forgotten. Since then, vigils on November 20 have been an annual tradition to commemorate and humanize the victims of violence against transgender people.
