The 42nd annual Donkey Race kicked off in the Bavarian town of Hersbruck.
The quirky German tradition features donkeys running down a makeshift track as their owners race to keep up with them… and some donkeys are more keen to race than others.
Spectators cheered on from the sidelines and veterinary staff were also close by - on hand to help with animal welfare.
Each race covered roughly 200 meters, with four donkeys racing at a time and multiple heats leading to semi-finals and a final.
Donkey number 18, named Anton, took the lead to the finish line to claim the title.
The idea for the race emerged in 1980 and was held in a different location, before being relocated to Hersbruck more than 30 years ago.
