"I was told early on that she wouldn't walk, she wouldn't speak nor smile.” Rute Freires’ nine-year-old daughter Tamara was born with congenital Zika syndrome, a name given to a pattern of birth defects caused by infections during pregnancy, after an outbreak in Brazil ten years ago. Rute is one of many mothers who feel they were forgotten by the Brazilian government after Zika disappeared from the public eye. Many of the mothers had to stop working, living off state benefits of around $265 (£199; €230) a month. Lots faced legal battles against the healthcare system trying to secure medication, baby formula and wheelchairs. Several have been abandoned by their husbands. Rute, along with other forgotten mothers, formed an independent group to help each other and demand more support - with almost 15 of them moving into the same public housing complex, where they’ve lived for the last five years.
