Itโs
#WorldTomistomaDay ๐
Have you met Fernando as yet? He happens to be your Toronto Zooโs only false gharial, making him not just a local rarity, but one of only 23 in all of North America! Closer to home, heโs the only false gharial in all of Canada ๐
False gharials are freshwater crocodilians that prefer slow-moving waters rich with vegetation. In the wild, they can be spotted in lakes, swamps, rivers, peat swamps, and freshwater swamp forests โ especially in Indonesia (eastern Sumatra, Kalimantan, western Java) as well as Malaysia.
Sadly, estimates are saying there are roughly 3,000 adults left in the wild, with their habitats continuing to be under threat from logging.
Stop by the Indo-Malaya pavilion and say hello to Fernando - all while discovering more about his incredible species. You may come to find what incredible teeth he has ๐
