Why is the August full moon called "The Sturgeon Moon?"⁠ ⁠ The name came about because giant lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes were readily caught during this part of the summer, and was an important component of the diets of Native Americans in the region.⁠ ⁠ The timing of the full moon will occur just days before the peak of the annual Perseids meteor shower, one of the most prolific meteor showers of the entire year. Meteor shower is ongoing, but is expected to peak on the evening of August 12, and will continue into the morning of August 13.
