The Miners win! ⛏️
Sussex County (43-31) defeated the Down East Bird Dawgs (29-44), 7-2, in game one of today’s doubleheader at historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC. The Miners have now won four straight contests.
Jordan Smith went 1-for-3, scored a run, and drove in two. The left fielder’s two-run single in the top of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and opened the floodgates for a six-run inning. Smith is now batting .330 for the season. Designated hitter Mahki Backstrom had a three-hit afternoon, and second baseman Hunter D’Amato knocked in a pair of runs.
Starting pitcher Rob Hensey (W, 7-3, 3.28 ERA) tossed a complete game for his team-leading seventh victory. The left-hander limited the Bird Dawgs to two runs on five hits and struck out seven batters.
