🗓 On This Day: August 6, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, a defining achievement of the civil rights movement. The law outlawed literacy tests, poll taxes, intimidation, and other discriminatory practices that had long suppressed Black voters, especially in the South. It followed the Selma-to-Montgomery marches and the tragedy of “Bloody Sunday” televised nationally in the spring of 1965 when peaceful protesters were violently attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. 🔎 Today, voter suppression remains a topic of national conversation.
