If these photographs were in color, you’d see Pennsylvania State College athletes in the late 1800s proudly wearing dark pink and black — Penn State’s very first colors. In 1887, students chose this bold combination to represent the college and its athletic teams — baseball, football, track, and tennis. But the vibrant pink didn’t last. After a few weeks in the sun, it faded to white, and by 1890, Penn State officially replaced the pink and black with the navy blue and white we know today. Still, we haven’t forgotten our roots.
