On the night of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere began his legendary midnight ride—a bold act of patriotism that helped ignite the American Revolution. After being quietly rowed across the Charles River from Boston to Charlestown, Revere set off to warn colonial leaders that British troops were advancing toward Concord. Two hundred and fifty years later, USS Constitution and her crew honored that pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Last night, the captain and crew of “Old Ironsides” ceremoniously escorted Paul to a location in Charlestown near the starting point of his historic ride—where he then rode into the night. That same night in 1775, two patriots climbed the steeple of Old North Church and held aloft two lanterns—a silent signal from Revere that the British were approaching by sea, crossing the Charles River.
