Sediment cores can tells us so many things about our planet's past and give us hints at what the future may hold. Using cores taken deep beneath the Arctic, scientists analyzed the escape of thermagenic methane from pockets under the seafloor during two previous periods of warming and the consequential melting of Arctic ice. While there are a host of critters that love that increase in methane, it's not good for most life on the surface.⠀
