A new report from CFJ’s
#TrialWatch, chreaa_malawi, and uschumanrightsclinic reveals that none of the women interviewed—many of whom showed signs of serious mental distress—said they had received adequate psychosocial support in prison.
Charity is one of them. While pregnant, she was beaten by her husband—then nearly stabbed in the stomach. She fought back. He died. She gave birth behind bars, without mental health care, despite showing serious signs of trauma.
Her case is not an anomaly—it reflects a wider crisis. Malawi’s justice system needs to address trauma and context when prosecuting survivors.
