A new report from CFJ’s
#TrialWatch, chreaa_malawi, and uschumanrightsclinic reveals that women in
#Malawi spend an average of 13.7 months in pretrial detention—well beyond the constitutional limit.
Grace was one of them. After her child was injured during a violent attack by her husband, she was arrested for the child’s death and left to wait over a year behind bars—without a trial, without a lawyer.
Her case is not an anomaly—it reflects a wider crisis. Malawi’s justice system needs to address trauma and context when prosecuting survivors.
