Today, CFJ’s #TrialWatch, in partnership with chreaa_malawi and uschumanrightsclinic, launched a report exposing a disturbing truth: Many women imprisoned for violent offenses in Malawi are actually survivors of gender-based violence (#GBV). They weren’t protected—they were prosecuted. 📊 Nearly half of the women interviewed were charged in cases stemming from sexual or gender-based violence. ⚖️ On average, they spent 13.7 months in pretrial detention—often without access to a lawyer. 🩺 None received medical care at the time of arrest—even when visibly injured. 📋 And in court, their histories of abuse were rarely considered. These aren’t just statistics. They’re women—mothers, daughters, sisters—whose stories of survival were rewritten as stories of guilt.
