#TrialWatch has reviewed 36 criminal defamation cases in #Thailand since the country adopted two anti-SLAPP provisions in 2019. The findings, detailed in a report released today, underline the urgent need for more robust protections. Although Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (#SLAPPs) are used worldwide to silence critical voices, they are notoriously ubiquitous in #Thailand. The 2019 anti-SLAPP rules have not proved sufficient to eliminate abusive cases that drag on for years. As Thailand’s Ministry of Justice considers new anti-SLAPP measures, we urge #Thailand to strengthen these protections, close legal loopholes, and implement meaningful deterrents against baseless litigation.
