#AileronSpades | Those mysterious plates…the first noticed, but least known difference between this kind of airplanes and all others. Spades can be considered an aerodynamic power steering which reduces the control forces the pilot encounters to operate the ailerons to roll left and right, especially at high speeds as without, these massive ailerons would be incredibly heavy to be easily moved in-flight. Their dimension, shape, angle of incidence, material, attachment point and weight are all variables that each pilot can change to fine tune the feeling on the controls (eg the bigger the spades, the lighter the ailerons) and everything I know about this I’ve learned it from Benjamin Freelove, one of the best humans and aviators out there. #aileron #ailerons #spades #spade #aerodynamic #aerodynamics
