World Athletics has announced it is introducing gene testing for athletes who want to compete in the female category of world ranking competitions. From 1 September 2025, athletes will need to prove they don’t have the SRY gene, typically found on the Y chromosome, to race in elite female events. The rule will apply to the World Athletics Championships, which take place from 13-21 September in Tokyo. World Boxing also approved the use of the SRY test in May when it introduced mandatory s3x testing for all athletes. "We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category you have to be biologically female.“ It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology,” said World Athletics president Lord Seb Coe. Critics say it’s another move targeting trans and intersex athletes. #sport #athletics #trans #intersex #worldathletics #genes
