Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested on July 27 at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport on a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault after a reported altercation with fellow sprinter and boyfriend Christian Coleman.
Police reports state Richardson allegedly yanked Coleman’s backpack, pushed him into a wall, and threw what appeared to be headphones at him. She was booked into the South Correctional Entity jail for more than 18 hours. Coleman declined to press charges.
At the US Track and Field Championships in Oregon, Coleman addressed Citius Mag about the incident. He described it as ‘a sucky situation all around’ and said he believed Richardson should not have been arrested, noting that everyone has personal struggles to work through.
He praised Richardson as ‘a great person’ and the ‘best female athlete in the world’ and emphasised his commitment to empathy and support rather than blame.
