Once found throughout the southeast United States, the Florida panther now occupies only a small area of South Florida, about 5 percent of its former range, and now less than 200 individuals remain in the wild. Every individual is important. Florida panthers are primarily threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation — all driven by Florida's growing human population and the developments and highways that accommodate it. So, what can we do about it? We're defending some of the panthers' most important occupied habitat in southwest Florida from destructive development.
