This lifecycle fuels entire ecosystems—delivering marine nutrients to freshwater streams and feeding everything from insects to bears to trees. 🚁 Gila trout were once on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, fires, over fishing, and non-native competition. When fires threatened their last strongholds, biologists airlifted them by helicopter to safety. 🦖 Lahontan cutthroat trout’s lineage stretches back over 100,000 years, but in recent decades, they’ve suffered habitat loss.
