When people ask how our summer was, we show them *this* video.
Over the summer, TU worked with the U.S. Forest Service and City of Missoula to breach the century-old McKinley Lake Dam in the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area. Removal of the dam will restore natural water levels, prevent environmental damage and provide downstream fish populations with cold, clean water during low-flow periods.
After extensive permitting, planning and effort — including hauling over 1,000 pounds of explosives by pack mule — the obsolete dam is gone, resulting in full stream and floodplain restoration, as well as 5 new acres of wetland area.
