🦌✨ At first glance, this deer might look like any deer. But look again. The elusive Huemul Deer is one of the rarest mammals in South America, with fewer than 1,500 left in the wild.
Once roaming freely across Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, today Huemul survive in small, scattered groups — hidden in some of the most rugged, remote places on Earth.
Last month, Re:wild partner rewildingchile, an offspring organization of TompkinsConservation, made an extraordinary discovery: a new Huemul subpopulation thriving in the remote Cape Froward region. This alpine landscape has been their refuge — and now, our partners have a chance to make it a protected national park to safeguard their future.
Join us in celebration today, on
#HuemulDay, as we feature one of our favorite “underfrogs”!
