The full moon in August is also known as the Sturgeon Moon, reaching its peak this year on the morning of Aug. 9. In the 1930s, the Maine's Farmer's Almanac first published the Native American names for the full moons, with each Moon name connecting to the season or month it appears. According to this almanac, the Moon names for respective months from January to December are Wolf Moon, Snow Moon, Worm Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon, Thunder Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon, Beaver Moon, and Long Night's Moon. The Algonquin tribes of what is now the northeastern United States gave the August Moon its name, recognizing that sturgeon—a large fish found in the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water—were more easily caught this time of year.
