Today we honored Yolanda Laney in between the Semifinal games of the Women’s Pro Showcase. Laney is a pioneer in women’s basketball, with a lengthy resume as a player then coach uplifting her community. Saturday at the Rumph, we gave Yolanda her flowers. She’s won at every step. Yolanda captured a pair of middle school championships, won another two Public League titles at West Philadelphia University City High School, and was a member of the 1982 Cheyney University team that participated in the first televised NCAA Women’s Basketball National championship. Her impact carried into a career as a coach, dedicating nearly 40 years to youth in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware. A living legend in the gym.
