Sussex County (46-31) defeated the Down East Bird Dawgs (29-47), 6-4, at historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC. The Miners have won seven straight contests and extended their lead over the New York Boulders to three games. Sussex County looks to sweep the six-game series tomorrow with first pitch at 1:30 PM.
Sussex County struck first when designated hitter Mahki Backstrom’s sacrifice fly scored center fielder Dom Johnson. Down East tied the game in the second, but the Miners regained the lead in the third when third baseman Sean Roby Jr. (pictured) cleared the bases with a three-run double.
The Bird Dawgs made things interesting when they trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, but Johnson provided an insurance run in the top of the ninth, driving in Hunter D’Amato with a double.
