📍Watts, Los Angeles – August 11, 1965
When a police stop escalated into a confrontation, years of frustration over racism, unemployment, and police brutality erupted.
Over the next six days, the Watts Uprising left 34 dead, more than 1,000 injured, and 600 buildings damaged.
While described as a “riot” at the time, many now recognize it as a uprising born of systemic neglect in marginalized communities.
🧠Nearly 60 years later, conversations about policing, justice, and equity continue nationwide.
