This is how to take a common minor pentatonic scale and turn it into something that fits right into the bebop language. We’re starting with a B minor pentatonic scale, and the key move is adding a chromatic enclosure around a specific note of the scale: the minor third. In this example, the third appears three times throughout the scale pattern, and each time we hit it, we use a specific chromatic enclosure to lead into it. The result is a much jazzier, more bebop-oriented line, while still keeping the recognizable sound of the pentatonic. This makes it more flexible, perfect for jazz contexts, or even for blending jazz with rock, blues, or fusion.
