Take a simple idea, a minor 7 arpeggio, and turn it into something that sounds way more jazzy and melodic using a clever twist.
We’re going to treat each chord tone of the minor 7 arpeggio as the root of a new arpeggio. That means:
1. From the root, we play a minor 7 arpeggio
2. From the flat 3rd, we play a major 7 arpeggio
3. From the 5th, we play another minor 7 arpeggio
4. From the flat 7, we play a major 7 arpeggio
Once you play these back-to-back, especially in triplet phrasing, the result is a flowing, ascending bebop-style line that outlines the harmony in a more colorful way.
This is a great concept to break out of boxy arpeggio shapes and give your lines that classic jazz phrasing.
