Multiple customers have lodged complaints with UK retailer Marks & Spencer after the company apologised to a mother and her 14-year-old daughter, who claimed they were distressed when a trans employee—described in the complaint as “at least 6ft 2in” and allegedly “biological male”—offered assistance in the lingerie section. M&S issued an apology and assured them help from a female colleague.
The apology prompted backlash, with patrons expressing disappointment that the retailer showed a perceived lack of support for their trans staff. Currently, over 900 individuals have signed an open letter urging M&S to retract the apology, stating that it appeared to entertain discriminatory views disguised as customer feedback, and calling for equal respect and legal protection for transgender staff members.
