The FBI’s 2024 hate crime data reveals that anti-LGBTQ+ incidents remain among the most commonly reported hate-motivated offences in the United States. Attacks based on sexual orientation accounted for 17.2% of total hate crimes, while those based on gender identity made up 4%. In total, there were 2,263 reported incidents targeting sexual orientation and 531 targeting gender identity.
Race and ethnicity-related hate crimes continued to be the largest category, comprising 51.8% of all reported incidents, followed by religion-related cases. The most frequently reported types of hate crime were intimidation (around 4,915 incidents), vandalism (3,714), simple assault (3,255), and aggravated assault (1,807). Notably, 989 incidents were reported at elementary or secondary schools.
