The Urbandale Community School District chose not to align one of its policies with a new state law that removed discrimination protections for transgender and nonbinary Iowans.
At least three other Des Moines metro school districts have done the same.
The Urbandale school board voted 6-1 on Monday, Aug. 11 to keep gender identity in a district policy that gives students the opportunity to receive a quality education. The Iowa Association of School Boards and legal counsel recommended deleting gender identity from the policy because of a 2025 law that removed gender identity as a protected class under the Iowa Civil Rights Act.
