Anna Li is still an MD/PhD student at Pitt, but she’s already designed a medical device, earned a patent and launched a company called Korion Health. It all started after Li watched too many patients making unnecessary and costly trips to the emergency room. She decided to create a stethoscope that patients can use at home to monitor their heart and lung function. The idea earned her a $1 million Hult Prize and an omnibus patent. But what’s most important to Li is that it helps patients take control of their own health. Plus, it’s cute. The stethoscope is turquoise with rainbow-colored lights and the cases come with panda ears or shark fins. “Why can’t medicine be cute?” she asks. “It has to be fun and cute. I will die on this hill.”
