a "ferris bueller" for this generation of queer kids, this day changes everything was a joy from start to finish. underhill really captures the big emotions of youth, and does especially well with those emotions queer kids try to parse when they're stuck in small towns and surrounded by small minds. falling in love with your best friend IS a queer right of passage, and the way it's handled in this day changes everything is fun and fresh with no heartbreak to be found. i loved leo's grumpiness to abby's whimsy, and they both felt like people i would have known in school. i grew up in a tiny midwestern town where my friends and i did things like join band and choir specifically to take the cool field trips to bigger cities, so i loved the relatability of this story. being a teenager essentially on your own in new york city around thanksgiving would have sent 17 year old me into a panic, but abby and leo have arguably the coolest day out and it was so fun to read about. also, any men...
