Do elephants like to listen to music? And if they do, what kind of music might they prefer?
Dr Lisa Yon from the uniofnottingham aims to find out.
August 12 marks World Elephant Day, an annual event dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants in the wild.
But experts want to improve the lives of elephants in captivity too.
Dr Lisa is leading a collaborative project with Ruth Goodridge and Adam Whitbread from the University’s School of Engineering, and Dr. Fiona French from London
Metropolitan, to create a ‘jukebox’ for elephants in captivity.
The findings could change the way we view interspecies communication, the importance of sound across the animal kingdom, and provide the chance for each individual to be able to choose what they listen to and let us know what they prefer.
Just as among humans, different people like to listen to different kinds of music, it seems likely that individual elephants may like different sounds.
