Did Ruth Asawa really use an apple to make this print? Yes—and it’s still looking good decades later🍎🎨 In bright overlapping colors, this print reveals the delicate floral form at the core of an apple. This composition is an early example of Asawa’s use of everyday objects—including fruit, a bicycle pedal, and carved potatoes to create intricate designs. But why no bugs? SFMOMA’s Paper Conservator, Amanda, explains that any natural organic juices would be substantially minimized by the thick paint application Asawa used. And most of the liquid would be water, so it doesn’t pose a big risk factor for attracting pests. 🐜🐜🐜 Catch “Ruth Asawa: Retrospective” before the closing rush and see how Asawa turned everyday items into extraordinary works.
