Q: Can you guess the artists that Kunié Sugiura captured in these photograms?
A: Yayoi Kusama, Jasper Johns, Daido Moriyama, Ushio Shinohara (in order of appearance)
Sugiura’s “Artist Series” features photogram portraits of American and Japanese artists, mostly from her generation. To create these works, she posed each artist in front of unexposed photographic paper that she pinned to a wall in her darkroom, studio, or sometimes the artist’s homes. Then she exposed the paper to light to create the image.
In each portrait, Sugiura included a reference to the artist’s work or persona: The photographer Daido Moriyama holds a camera, for instance. Many of Sugiura’s subjects are identifiable by their profiles alone, and their personalities come through despite the lack of detail.
