On Independence Day, we reflect on the evolving meaning of “We the People.” These works by Shepard Fairey, part of his "We the People" series (2017), highlight the power of portraiture to confront exclusion and assert visibility. Created in response to rising xenophobia and nationalism, the series reclaims patriotic iconography to assert the values of dignity, protection, and courage in the face of fear. Fairey's series works as a mirror, but also a message, opening up the door for conversations and self-reflection on where viewers consider their place in the story. ------ [Shepard Fairey, "We the People Are Greater Than Fear," 2017; Gift of Amplifier and Obey Giant; © Shepard Fairey; photo: Don Ross Shepard Fairey, "We the People - Defend Dignity," 2017; Gift of Amplifier and Obey Giant; © Shepard Fairey; photo: Don Ross Shepard Fairey, "We the People Protect Each Other," 2017; Gift of Amplifier and Obey Giant; © Shepard Fairey; photo: Don Ross]
