Have you ever wondered what a modern-day Picasso slam dunk might look like?
Hank Willis Thomas’ (hankwillisthomas ) “Guernica” brings Pablo Picasso’s famous anti-war painting to life in a whole new way. Thomas incorporates the combativeness of team sports into this mural-sized quilt, while using sports jerseys to draw attention to modern voices for social justice.
“[Athletes] are not supposed to be political. They’re supposed to do their job. They don’t get paid for speaking. If [Muhammad] Ali, if Jim Brown, if Paul Robeson hadn’t spoken, what would the world look like?” —Hank Willis Thomas
📍 You can find Hank Willis Thomas’ work on Floor 7 as a part of our new sports exhibition “Get in the Game.”
