Happy birthday,
#EllsworthKelly! 🎈
The abstract artist was born on this day in 1923. After studying in New York and Boston and serving in World War II, Kelly spent a transformative period in Paris from 1948 to 1954. There, he developed his signature style, characterized by minimalist compositions that distilled natural forms into simple shapes. "I like my paintings to be mysterious...they have to be investigated," said Kelly.
Kelly's work often eliminated visible brushwork, focusing on pure color and form. He later abandoned traditional rectangular canvases in favor of shaped, joined panels, blurring the lines between painting and sculpture.
We love these visitor moments with Kelly's works on our Floor 4 galleries captured by sf.beforesunset and krisonthestreets.
