Martin Wong's "Chinese New Year’s Parade" (1992-1994) captures the vibrant energy of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Wong was raised in San Francisco and returned to the city from New York following his AIDS diagnosis in 1994. His early art was shaped by the psychedelic movement and his fascination with the rich cultural traditions of Asia. From 1964, he spent fifteen years living in Eureka, California, where he produced paintings, ceramics, and calligraphy that featured a vibrant mix of Eastern mythology, local landscapes, and playful imagery. Throughout his career, his paintings were characterized by a unique stylized realism that explored homoerotic desire and the experiences of urban life. 📍 See Wong’s larger-than-life artwork, painted on a 7-by-10-foot canvas, on Floor 2.
